Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what type of veijita this girl is?

Can you also confirm that it is a female?

I bought this veijita from SLS about 2 months ago. Was told it was definitely a female.

Can't be 100%, but do look like a girl.

Need to have a clear side picture of the whole fish.

How long has the bump been on her?

Bump has only been there at a max a couple of days. Haven't been home in time to check out the tank with the lights on for a few times, si didn't notice when it first for there, but it's very new.

I was trying to get a side shot but she just wouldn't co-operate. Will try again over the weekend.

i usually find the lateral line to be more broken on female's
and more black on the leading edge of the pectoral fins

maybe to the naked eye those things are more obvious

oh my female also has a black splodge on the throat

looks like a male to me, too, I've made the same observation on the female's lateral line. Also the females I have and I've seen aren't as coloured up as that, although that might be put down to differences in variety. Shape is like a male, too, the tummy isn't as bulging as a female's should be.

the photos look just about identical to my veijita males, I don't know exactly what variety they are, though. The females are light yellowy-brown with a broken line and they have a red mark on the operculum just in front of the pectoral fins and they get yellower as they get closer to spawning. Also, the dorsal of the female in this variety has a more rounded tip, than on your photos (which looks like it's been nipped a little on the end), if I am to go by the ones I have. My males have a light tip on the pelvic fins, too, like the fish on your pictures, which the females don't have. Having looked at your old shots again and your new shots, I would say it's almost definitely a nice plump male in good condition ...

Hmmm, interesting. I thought as she/he was a bit older than my other female veijita's in the tank, that was why my old male macmasteri and dominant veijita male (both now passed away) were always displaying to her. She never ran off and seemed to enjoy the show.

I'm not an expert on these for sure, having never kept veijita, but I would guess - male. Too much red and other colours, most apisto females really tend to yellow and the other colours show up much less.

ALso Apisto females generally have more black on the pectoral fins and leading edge of the dorsal, and less colour in the fins.
