    discus changing color

my male (i think) blue turq has gone very dark in the last 2 days.....also hangs around the inlet tube of the external filter a lot.......only comes away from there when feeding time is about to happen, and then returns very quickly.....is this a sign of mating or spawning to come??????Jim

Sounds more like female behaviour to me.

    Is there a mate around?

Timothy, discus can live for around 10 years, and I don't think Jim's fish are that old

but you're right, it is a sign of old age in a lot of fish. In this case, I think it is a female guarding the spot where she wants to lay eggs, and our lovely discus do turn dark when they are spawning and raising fry.

Well done Timothy. You're on the right track. Learning all about fish is half the fun :P
