Joining two 4ft tanks to become a 8ft tank ??

    Hi all,

i got two 4 ft tanks where they are sitting next to each other (side by side). i was thinking if i can join the two tanks together, how cool would that be !!! then i will have a huge discus tank!!

Two 48x14x20 LxWxH i think they are only 6mm glass

    Here is the plan:

remove the glass from the touching side so two 14x20 is gone
silicon the touching edge, will probably cut six 2-3 inches width of glass stripe to cover the in and outside of the joining edges, and a 1ft long glass to be the top bridge.

    Ok will this work ???
    will it break easily ??

    Plz tell me your ideas!!
I'm so addicted to Discus, plz help

i don't know that much about tanks but that sounds like a bad idea to me. why not sell your 2 4ft tanks and invest in a proper 8ft tank? i would not risk losing my discus from a dodgy tank...would you?

Billy, I've got an 8 foot tank, and it is 12 mm glass.

I do think the pressure of that much water would be too great for 6mm glass with a join down the middle.
Thirty-five years keeping and breeding discus, and I'm still learning :P

ok sounds like a real bad idea

    How much will a 8ft x 14x 18 cost ?? maybe 10-12mm glass.

my stand will only take a 14" width tank. (real bad design )

Matt, you are right !! spot on i dont want to lose all my fish from a dodgy tank.

Sorry but I agree as well. Studied engineering at university and a whole unit was on stress and strain. The cealant doesnt hold enough resistance to the pressure of the water. And also a join in the middle of the tank isnt a good place. Not worth the trouble.

    Hey,
I havnt studied engineering but from what I've seen its only the higher and wider tanks (over 2ft) that need 10 mm plus glass. Just a gues but wouldnt you only need 8mm glass max on an 8 14 18.
    PS i saw a 10 18 18!

You would have to mad, stupid or both. Thats alot of water to get off the floor.

My old 9x2x2.5 had 10ml glass, a double base and stress bars galore.

If you do it I hope your single, cause you soon will be.

if you have a single tank 8 x 2 x 2 where are you gonna hold your babys when you fish start breeding?

2 tanks are always better than one

2 8x2x2 of course are better still lol
