    Good Quality Cheaper Canister Brands

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the cheaper brand canister filters on their tanks before?

I have plans for a 6x2x2 in the near future and would like to use two canisters on it if possibe. But this would only be achieved if I could purchase the cheaper brands.

I could just purchase a single Eheim or fluval model that has the rated capacity, but I dont think they make any that can filter that size tank at the recommended 2-3 times an hour.

    Any idea's?

Via Aqua's current designs are pretty easy to work with. I have had a problem with one, but I have 4 of them. Given how much cheaper they are than Eheim I can't justify the extra expense. If you don't plan on plants I'd suggest one large canister a large hang on the back filter. It's a little more flexable and bacteria will survive longer in a power outage with a hotb.

Depending on where you buy you should be able to get a 1200ltr/hr canister and a 800ltr/hr hotb for under $250.

I like the eheim filters because they go for years without any trouble, and replacement parts are always available. However, they are very expensive, and just one filter will not be enough on that size tank.

I have friends who have had a good run out of the less expensive filters, so ask your aquarium shop what feedback they are getting about the other filters.

The other way you could approach it is to get the eheim, and run two decent size sponge filters in there as well. Mature sponge filters do a terrific job of biological and fine particle filtration.
Thirty-five years keeping and breeding discus, and I'm still learning :P

Eheim actually makes filter that will handle your tank size. I have seen it, it's a big filter and it makes Eheim cannister 2028 looks small.

    Nice filter but expensive.

Ya, $660 for one canister is way too much.

When you look at the cheaper brands, I could buy two, have more lcirculation and more surface area for bacteria for half the price.
