Advice please....
I woke up at 5:30 am to find the power out at home. Apparetnly it had been out for about an hour and came back on at about 6:00 - so 1.5 hours with no water circulating through my canister filters.
When the power came back on I dosed with toxivec & bacteria & took off a bit late for work.

How crucial is this? How long can the bio filter last when turned off?

Should be ok...

Just dont feed the fish for a day or 2.

I think someone said about 2 to 3 hours. Less than that you should be ok.

I bought an UPS for computer and hooked my filters to it. That will give me about 4 hours. I think most power outage will not last more than 6 hours. I should be ok in most cases. If more than that, I have other things to worry about too.

I definitely want to get a UPS. I'm thinking of building a more substantial battery backup & solar generator - perhaps this could run both filter & heater for a few days.

mistakes r crucial

Have you considered a generator Bill? We bought one 12 months ago and it's been an absolute God send on quite a few occasions.

I had a post about them - they are certainly a good option, but 2 or 3 days
is a bit of an ask - I will outline how you could achieve this later on when I get back from dinner.

but here is the 10 sec version

basically you could get an APC ups that runs 24v internally off ebay and buy some big deep cycle batteries that could run them for a day or so

heaters - hmm in qld I wouldn't bother in an emergency situation - filtration is what you are after - most are about 90w - 120w which will run for hours on a big ups.

I have thought about a generator - if I did get one I would like it to run on biodiesel.
Please send me any details you may have.

If only I lived in QLD. But alas, here in Melbourne, a day with no heater could be fatal!
