Of you who have tried or use this method for controlling surface film what are your opinions.

I havn't tried one, but I've heard they are useless on FW tanks. :ug

For surface film, you use a surface skimmer, not a protein skimmer.

Protein skimmers on FW tanks are great, so long as you get a very dense/fine air bubble in the skimmer chamber. You would be surprised at the amount of crud that can come out.

Protein skimmers are great on freshwater tanks. I had one on a tang 6 footer that worked really well however it was designed specifically for fresh water. Am I allowed to name the manufacturer on this site?

David.

The skimmer came from Aquasonic. It was very well made and at the hatchery where I used to work, we hade a lot of Aquasonic equipment which all worked very well. They have a massive range albeit a little bit expensive but as usual you get what you pay for. www.aquasonic.com.au
