The sump is used primarily as a mechanical filter, but does have some chemical filtration. It also adds water volume to the system to increase stability and stocking capacity.
Water from the tank(s) goes in one end and it flows up down through the chambers over a series of weirs. I used a combination of foam and Filter wool for filtration. The water then flows out a manefold and into the trickle filter for final filtration and aeration before being pumped back up into the tanks. The filter material sits on plastic grills to improve water movement, and I have grills to place on top of the material to stop it from floating up.

This one is made entirely from perspex and it has a crossbar for added support to prevent the sides from bowing. I have not had any problems running heated water through it.
