 no Rytis i dont think so    its just an ordinary blue diamond and i'm sure its been one for a few generations. there are 3 kinds of diff temp lighting in the room hence the yellow

thanks D, its wierd i just got them a couple of months ago, they paired up and were taking over the tank so i moved them and they spawned the next day, then they got fin rot so i put them in a seperate tank with tetracycline and they spawned the next day, this was the third spawn on the 8th day of the tetracyline dose, so i changed the water and let them be and this is what they came up with. i paid 80 each for the first 2 bd's and 40 each for these two as they were in a very bad state(jet black) and i felt that if i dont buy them i'd be responsible for their deaths,so i did and this is how they repay me, by giving me an extra two month heavy water change routine.

Heya Samir,

That's a great story mate ... well done :thumb great job on getting these guys back up to scratch. I was going to say they look like (from the pics) a young pair, which is another added bonus  Mind if I ask how old they are ? they look around 10-12 months IMO ... judging by the pectral fins.

Best of luck with them :D

Cheers,

Dee

i have absolutely no idea.they do have pretty big eyes for their size. i was told about 10 months when i got them but it seems odd for a 12 month old pair to get everything right on just the third attempt and have so many wrigglers. maybe they just have good parenting genes. i would have been happy with 30 fry. so many is going to be a big problem later as i dont have any space.

goldenpigeon
Sat Jul 08, 2006, 12:09 AM
dude they look awesome! those are some great fish and would make great fosters too if you had another pair that wasnt getting it right :D keep up the excellent work :D your going to be very popular down your way when they are ready to sell ;)

Dee
Sat Jul 08, 2006, 05:08 AM
Hiya Samir,

Yeah it can be surprising at times how proficient young pairs can be, I guess it's up to the individual pairs. I have had pairs that take for ever and ever to get a spawn and still dont get it right  Then there was my little Albino pair that spawned at 6 months old and produced wrigglers  , which didnt attatch :x But yeah just goes to show ya that all pairs are different in their own way.

Keep up the good work mate, that's a great number of fry you got there :)

Cheers,

Dee :)

they have started to browse around a bit. i'm giving them some powdered fish food thats fouling up the water (theres no way i'm hatching BS) so more water changes, maybe the next time around i'll try microworms.

goldenpigeon
Sat Jul 08, 2006, 07:25 AM
why not hatch bs? its dead easy! cheap too IMO

samir
Sat Jul 08, 2006, 07:49 AM
dunno, i just hate doing it. i did it once for my betta fry but microworms worked better, maybe next time.

Samir - I have heard of people using a fry food for discus which you can get from Xtreme. I have no idea what it is called, but it supposedly gives you 20% plus better growth rates on discus fry.

Might be worth a look .

thanks guys, i have removed the parents as they were getting irritated and am giving them frozen BBS and fry food. added a UV. all thats left is a little problem called space :) . no deaths that i know of so far, one of the pair was getting bugged and snapping at them resulting in major domestic fireworks between the pair, so off they went. i did an approx head count, around 120-140 with about 10 odd looking like culls.

Lower the pH to 4.2 immediately!

G

samir
Wed Jul 19, 2006, 01:00 PM
  i dont know what the ph is, i keep leaving the ph meter on and draining the batteries, this is the third time, so i've stopped checking ph. i'm guessing its about 6.5-7.2 . as long as they look fine i dont really care what it is. i guess the fact that the fish spawned in it and so many babies hatched is good enough for me , i hope brilliant doesn't read this, it just wouldn't cut it with him

Hi Samir,

Great pics and well done :thumb I wish I lived in Sydney, I would relieve you of 10 or so of those little cuties

As for what to feed them. Although obviously I have never tried it on discus but, maybe you'd like to try a dry food that a lot of killifish keepers use. Check out:
http://www.ta-aquaculture.co.uk/ In the dry food section there is the red granular crumb that is available here through a hobbiest.

I am using this food on all 25 species of killifish I have and they love it. It comes in many different grades that make feeding fry relatively easy. Because of this food I got really slack at hatching BBS!

Just an alternative and above is just my opinion.

Great job again!

its just a 3 footer . i drain the tank down to about 4 inches. i have a 2 footer at the back with a small powerhead. takes about an hour to fill the fry tank up again. sometimes i do it twice a day coz there's a he11 of a lot of fish for a standard 3 foot. i guess i do about 80% wc at a time at least once a day.
