Hi folks. Could anyone provide some feedback on how many discus would be recommended for a 5ftx2x2 tank. Large driftwood and plastic plants with gravel floor. Advice from the aquarium near by said 12 - 15 adults.

Also how many litres would my tank hold. I'm a bit confused.

Advice appreciated. Jimmyd

yup that would be right. make sure you have enough biological filtration to handle 12-14 adults (i'd keep 12 though upto 15 should be okay). i'd add them a few at a time. volume of tank = lenght in cm X depth in cm X height in cm, divided by 1000. In your case 152.4 X 61 X 61 = 567080.4 divided by 1000 = 567 litres full to the brim.

Cheers Samir. I have an Eheim 2217 external canister filter. I think it does about 100litres per hour. Is that sufficient enough? Also any clue how many litres my tank would hold. My guess is 300, would that be right? Thank for feedback

with filtration i'm an obsessive, not an expert :D . you'd get a better idea if you wait for the older and wiser. i have about 400 litres on which i use one 1000l/hr canister with wool and ceramic and one hang on filter with just ceramic,i want to convert a two foot tank into one big filter, and two sponge filters which i am cycling.

Fyi

Im running an ehiem 2217 which does about 1000 litres per hour. this is the sole filter in my 4 x 2 x 2 which houses 2 Adult discus and 3 peppermint cat fish.

i have a sand substrate with a drift wood piece and thats it! easily does the job mate.

Thanks for the feedback samir and nicholas.
Hey nicholas r u saying my set up would be sufficient as is even with 10 to 12 discus in it?

I have 5 discus - 2 10cm and 3 5cm and a dozen neons at present with no water problems.

Sorry about this guys, being a newbie, i've never actually measured my tank.OOps. Having just done that my tank size is actually 152cmx45x35 which equates to 240litres. What would be your recommendations around these parameters. Anyone please. Ta

Jimmy, IMO its better to play it safe then sorry so i reccommend you get another filter..

Whether it be a small internal filter or hang on filter its up to you. My conern is if you have to clean your cannister you wont be able to do it very well because you will loose good bacteria...Hence the reason to have another filter...

HTH :D

yup and then alternate the cleaning. maybe 4 fish or less should suffice till the filtration is properly established and then move to 6.
