What the ... is that?

I was cleaning the bottom today and during the process I discovered that thing. Does anyone know what is it? Iknow the quality is not good but it was the best I could. The reflections at the glass really was a prob.

I think you've got it in one. Hydra. Larger fish will eat them, but they are a real danger to tiny fry (and to baby brine shrimp).

They have a base that attaches to the glass, and then branches coming from a centre trunk. Each of those branches has grabbing hooks on the end, and they catch tiny fry and consume them.

Not much of a problem in a tank with adult fish. Just remove them manually.

Thanks for the response guys. So you believe I do not have to really worry. It looks like a grasshoper with large eyes (compared to its body) with 3 pairs of legs and a 3 wing tail. It is a strange creature. Thanks again.

Lary red Ive seen the photos of hydra, and I can tell that that thing in my tank wasnt a hydra. The one I discovered looks like an insect. You know, with head body tail etc. As I said looks like a grasshoper.

Aghhhh no ..................... that's not hydra, that's a dragon fly nymph :shock:

Dangerous to any small to medium fish.

Exterminate the nasty little beastie :x

and check your tank carefully for any more of them.

They usually come in on plants as eggs, or as tiny insects.

And they grow by sucking the living juices out of small fish.

Finally hatching into a pretty dragon fly.

This is one. They hatch out white, and develop colour after a few feeds. Can be either brown or green, depending on the species of dragonfly.

Oh yes, they are fast, and catching a cardinal would be no problem for them.

They are quite capable of wiping out a whole school of cardinals over a period of time.
