Just wondered if anyone has used or has heard of scoria being used as a substrate. A google search says that it is formed from volcanic rock and is high in iron and magnesium. (good for plants)
Might save a few bob when setting up a tank as well.
Any thoughts?
Cheers

I have tried it, and wasnt overly impressed. It took ages to clean, and being that it is so porous it breaks down quite easily leaving a murky red dusty type residue.
It looked good as I had Clown Loaches in the tank, but after I noticed they were cutting up there noses proding around everywhere I got rid of it.
On a plus note, it is dirt cheap, around $5 for 20-25kgs

Scoria seems a bit jagged and would not be good for gravel foraging fish. Very good point about it breaking down. I would be very interested to see what scoria composition does to change water parameters.

If I recall I dont think it made any effect on the water by way of buffering etc
