Finally after around ten attempts this pair have finally allowed their fry to last more than a few days. Here they are with their first successful batch of fry at day 4 of free swimming.

Fry are still doing well, and both adults are sharing parenting duties.

This is a young pair of Marlboro Reds, just 14 months old. I have been trying to spawn them for a few months now. At first they ate their eggs, time after time, then they managed to eat the wrigglers straight after hatching.

The last couple of times they have allowed the fry to get to the free swimming stage, but refused to allow the fry to attach, seeming almost irritated by the attempts of the fry to feed. I wonder if red fish have very sensitive skin?

Previously I have left the tank light on 24/7 but as you can see, these particular fish are a very intense red, almost like a neon red, and the fry seemed very confused, and hung around the heater, the filter, the cone, anything other than the parents. This time I turned the tank lights off, and just left the room light on 24/7. The female darkened considerably, even developing peppering on what was previously a clean face, something she has never done in previous spawning attempts.

The fry prefer to feed from the darker female. The male has not darkened at all, but the fry will still go to him to feed, however it's obvious they prefer the female.

I'm very pleased that this pair have finally managed a successful spawn, as I bred the parents, so this is a second generation Marlboro Red of my own breeding. A very satisfying feeling.

Moral of the story, "GIVE THEM TIME"

Here are the babies at just over three weeks. Mum is starting to look a bit worn from the fry feeding off her. Dad didn't go as dark, so the fry weren't as attracted to him as they were to mum. Anyway, today the parents have been moved to a new tank to rest and recover with lots of TLC. and for the first time the babies are on their own.
