Home made food for bristlenose

Hi there, have anyone tried making a mix for bristlenose before ?

What do you put into the mix ?? All vegies ?

Hey Dr V i don't bristlenose just yet but i have about a 7" Pleco and i made him up a vegie mix about 2 weeks ago.

1x Carrot
1x Zucanni
1x Pumpkin

ummm forgot there are heaps maimly just all you normal vegies and the i mixed this up in a food proceccor but just pulsed it it was still very chucky when i feed it frozen and my pleco loves it and clown loachs and stuff lots of the other fish like it as well.

KJ made a mix for bottom dwellers like bn etc. you should ask him about it. i think he just put vegies, spirulina and naybe a bit of meat.

Hi Dr V,

I am in the process of setting up a tank for cats.

After a bit of searching i come across a few ideas.

This one looks good for both adults and baby cats.

3 parts spirulina
1 part agar agar
Enough water to make a paste.

Agar agar is a natural setting agent that will set at room temp and is available at most Asian grocery stores.

Make a smooth paste then flatten and freeze.

I have not personally made this recipe yet but will soon. From what i have read the agar will bind the spirulina very well and the cats simply suck on the pieces.

Gelatine can not be used as it is derived from an animal product and apparently too much is not good for digestion.

i use a massive B/N mix which works great

spinaich and lettuce blanched

zuchinni
carrots
garlic
spirulina
small amount of BH

etc etc

works a treat :wink:

Your mix sounds a lot like mine Ryan, and my Bristlenose love it. The Discus even have a pick at it. :D

Dr V, i will take a pic in the next few days of the agar agar, one thing to note it must be a plain type as there are many that are flavoured.

Okay thanks Ben, I never thought that agar agar is an english word :p

My friend told me that agar agar can also be added into beef heart mix to help hold them together when put into the water.

I have heard agar agar can be used in a BH mix Dr V. It would be a lot better than using gelatine!

I have used it a few times making set Asian style puddings! and yes! they are yum!!!!!

I just made a batch of the spirulina agar mix.
below is some photo's.

This is just a trial run to see how it goes and how my peppermints enjoy it.
But if it all goes to plan it will make a excellent addition to their diet!

I will post my findings soon.

I have fed this mix a few times and it will need a touch more agar as it slowly disolves and makes the water green.

But! the peppermints love sucking on this treat!
