Everyone has there little recipe for making beef heart mix, here is mine.
I have taken some pictures of the ingredients I have used as well as the process of making it. For those that do not have access to an electrical mince a hand held one will be fine it just will take longer. There are many recipes out there for beef heart mix, just find a recipe that suits you and your discus.

The recipe makes approximately 8 1/2 kilograms, so if you are making this particular recipe just divide the ingredients to the amount you wish to make.

3.5 kilograms of cleaned beef heart with all sinus and fat removed
1kilogram of beef liver with sinew removed
2 kilograms of scallops with roe on
1 kilogram of fresh prawn meat.

½ cup lecithin
1 cup of wheat germ
100 grams of spirulina powder
1 table spoon calcium lactate (not a necessary ingredient to add and very hard to find!)
4 cups of blanched and very puréed baby spinach. (I prefer to use baby spinach as the leaves are much softer and there is less stalk matter. Available from most major supermarkets)

Step one

Clean the beef heart and liver then run through a mincer once, then add the lecithin, wheat germ and if using, add the calcium lactate. Run through the mincer again.

Step two

Mix the prawns, scallops with the spirulina then mince once through the mincer

Step three

Now add the beef mix, seafood mix and spinach together. Mix very well for a few minutes till well incorporated and evenly mixed.

Step four

I use silicon paper but normal greaseproof paper works fine, just cut squares add a few spoon full of mix and fold the paper over. Repeat this process until all beef heart mix has been done. Seal well in plastic containers, I like to date the beef heart mixture when made so this gives me an idea how much is used and when it was made.

Step five

Freeze the mix. When serving to discus I like to defrost it in the fridge slightly for an about 4 hours before feeding. The mix will still be semi frozen but will be able to break up in the water more easily.

Bon appetite

Chris,
here is a break down on price.
As i work as a chef i can get some of the things for trade price.

scallops $15.50 per kilo
prawns $16 per kilo
beef heart $10 for 4 hearts
liver $2 per kilo

baby spinach $8 per kilo
wheat germ $3 per pack aprox
lecthin $3 per pack aprox

Its the extras which add the price.

500 grams calcium lactate $66 , 20 grams used
500 grams spirulina $75 100 grams used

For this amount of mixture the cost was just under $100.

cheers,
Ben

Couple of questions:

Where can you buy silicon or greaseproof paper?

And what is the wheat germ, calcium lactate, and lecithin for?

grease paper - supermarket

lecithin - promotes nerve system and blood flow health

Thats right Nick and..

wheat germ a good source of fibre to keep the fish regular!
and calcium lactate to aid in the development of bones, ie growth. As far as i know calcium lactate is the easiest calcium fish can assorb.

My goodness Ben,

I reckon you should be a chef! But let me just break down each ingredient to see if I can work out the purpose of adding it...

BH - for protein/growth
Beef Liver - protein/growth
Scallops - protein/colour enhancement
Prawn Meat - protein/colour enhancement
Lecithin - nervous system
Wheat Germ - fibre
Calcium lactate - bones/growth
Spirulina - for colour
Spinach - for fibre

Am I right ?

Has anyone tried:
Metamucil (for fibre/removing blockages)
Adding BS or BW to their mix (protein)
Adding multivitamin (for health)
Garlic (for immunity)
Colour Bits (eh I dunno why lol)

Personally - Im going to try combining elements of Ben's and Ladyred's mix to see if I can get some awesome results!

Thanks G,

I reckon you should be a chef!
Funny enough i do work as a chef! lol

I am very happy with this recipe and it works extremely well for me!
next time i makle a batch i would like to include pea's into the mix, like ladyreds recipe.

Metamucil (for fibre/removing blockages)

Ground psyllium husks would be better as metamucil might have other non fish friendly additives. Not sure about using psyllium husks though…?

Adding BS or BW to their mix (protein)
better to feed these is seperate feeds. would need to be defrosted then fozen again which is not a good idea.

Adding multivitamin (for health)

There is no problem adding small amount of multi vitamins.
Pentavite used for childred would be the best. I tried to add everything in my recipe that would cover all the essentials.

Garlic (for immunity)

I have tried in the past adding garlic. i never found or saw any benifiets, but thats just my opinion.

Colour Bits (eh I dunno why lol)

by adding colour bits it will bulk out the mix and give a little bit more as well as adding some natural colour enhancers.

Nice mix Ben,

nice and cheap too!

i also add blanched carrots for vitamin C and carotin (spelling)

capsicum for carotin (again LOL)

heaps of garlic 6-8 cloves to make it taste yummmmmmmmmmmy

one women's multi vitamin 8-)

but you can see that both bens and my mix produce laying pairs, so the best mix to make is the mix that serves your fish best

Got a question. In your opinion would that amount of food go off in time in the freezer.

My vet told me never to feed garlic to my dogs, something about damaging their blood, would this have an effect of fish? what benefit does it give to the fish?

Cheers

I want to have a go at making your recipe. Just want to know whether you have altered the ingredients at all since this was initially posted?

Cheers

3 months is the freezer life of seafood but if you have a non frost free freezer it should last 6 months
