I used to go fishing off the pier in hastings (Vic) and patterson lakes and even St Kilda I loved it. But haven't been for years.
I "stole" one of my dads fishing role with the intention of going fishing... but never seem to get around to getting a license so there goes my fishing.... great fish you've got there. When I was a kid we used to fish in the creek near our house and catch minnows and eels. Being of dutch heritage my dad would cook the eels.. Yum!!

i would have to say i have the greatest fishing spot in the world 10 min from my house

IT IS THE MOST AWSOME PLACE EVER

you almost feel as if you could stick your hands in and simply pull out the fish

although i mostly catch freshwater fish, perch, yellowbelly, bass you do also get some great barra

if i duck out today i'll snap a pick (although you'll have to convince me to tell you where it is LOL)

Heh Kinezo, that snapper could have made sushi out of you!

Nicholas, nice catch, i also like your boat!!! Is that a suzuki motor on the back? i think i saw the label in one of your earlier posts....

Any sydney fishermen about, that know of any good spots to go fishing? My girlfriends dad has a 20 ft boat with a 125 merc on it, but he knows nothing of fishing, and im a land lubber, so have know idea where to actually go on a boat..

Ive heard the spit bridge is good, and also botany bay...

hi benny,

yeah its a suzuki engine 140 hp 4 stroke. The boat is called a Bar Crusher. Mates boat purpose built rough weather fishing boat.

we has it out in 2 meter seas last week for an eight house fishing session, really good strong boat! that can handle the rough stuff.

Whoahhh nice catch !!

nicholas76
Thu Dec 29, 2005, 08:34 PM
not sure what you mean by floater pilchard mulisha.

We used normal western australian pilchard .

the rig comprised of a pea ball sinker 5/0 hook and 30 pound trace.

Mulisha
Sat Dec 31, 2005, 03:59 PM
oh ok kool mate

What a floater pilchard is no sinker then a swivel then a 2.5m trace around the 60lbs mark then a set of gang hooks 4/0 then hook the pilchard up on that so it lays flat and doesn't spin. Then cast it out then feed out a fair bit of slack line out with it so it sinks slowly so it stays around mid to top water.

I do this in QLD and catch alot of the reef fish this way like Tuna, Cobia, Mackeral, Snapper all those surface fish and i have alot of sucess with it i usally use a bait runner reel with alot of line becuase i fish light line only like 20lbs so it i have to fight the fish not just reel it across the top of the water LOL

Hope that makes sense i sometimes don't make sense LOL

nicholas76
Sun Jan 01, 2006, 05:52 AM
yep thats the rig we use too!!!!!

ideal setup

lots a big snapper go for that rig , no pressure on the line,

i had a snapper chew through my 24kg mono like it was butter on that rig last week

Thats a big catch nick. How did it take you to pull that fish ?

nicholas76
Tue Sep 19, 2006, 08:45 AM
Actually mate it was pretty easy.

I was using a handline with some pretty heavy duty line at that! probably 2-3 minutes tops.

As you can see I was only wearing one glove at the time as it was my first cast of the day. Didnt get time to put the second glove on as this ripper jumped on the hook.

To be honest my intentions were to let it go but the deck hand took it off me and spiked it so quickly i didnt have the option.

I froze it and brought it back to Melbourne. It fed 13 of us.

Lovely fish and great meat if you ever get the chance to try it.

My mate and I are possibly the worlds worst fishermen. Whenever we get a day off together its either raining, windy or raining AND windy. When he's not puking overboard (sometimes its good burley) we catch a few fish here and there.
Here's a decent Hawksbury bream that he caught a few months ago. From memory it was the only fish we boated the whole day.

Yeah they are murray cod...

They are making a huge comeback and hopefully it will stay that way if everyone practices catch and release with em...

As far as location goes lets just say all along the queensland nsw border is thick with them, particularly the western tributaries that are part of the murray darling basin, just have to spend the time looking.

Have spent many days treking miles upon miles searching, coming up with nothing, finally found them but...

Last trip between 3 of us we released 60+ fish in three days so they are around if your prepared to put in the hard yards.

i have dog and its great soft plastics are the way to go and there is so many out now . it good becouse you are moving all the time its not as boring and it dosent cost as much as frozen bait al the time . I know that every time i used to go fishing it would cost me heaps , i had to have prawns and pillys and squid you name it i got it. this way i just change the colour and shape and keep goin

I've used them a few times but always in really crappy weather with not much success but it's a great feeling when you get a hit. Couple of bream and taylor but never a lizard. And gee the taylor make a mess out of them!

Cuong
Wed Oct 25, 2006, 09:42 AM
Lizards are easy pickings on soft plastics, head out to your local estuary on the dropping tide and cast around on the mudbanks. Nice fish though samir!

scott bowler

good thing about fishing for lizards on plastic you can catch them in a foot or two of water, you can see the bait jumping of the bottom and see the flatys hit its great .

Just got back from a bit of an exploritory trip to the new england and grafton areas to find new bass and trout water.

Couldnt find any bass but got 19 eastern cod in a session (incidental captures, all released unharmed)

Then fished the new england area and found some really high quality rainbow trout in waters we hadn't fished before, ended up with 38 fish, all released unharmed.

Sounds like you've found yourself another good cod and trout hole  How many days hike was it?

The cod were a few hours swim with all the gear as it is so remote there are no walking tracks and it is way easier to swim.

The trout are very easy to find most of them were caught within an hours walk of the road/track. It was the first time i have fished for them in summer and they seem to be way more aggressive and alot better size around. It was new territory aswell so maybe we just found better streams.

may be you should make specal rods with names and things like that , what would one cost for a boat rod for spinning gear. in penrith colours a sydney footy team with my name on it ? one piece about 6ft haha

hey fish_r...

nice catch mate.. thats awesome to catch them off the rocks...
but ur in SA.. thats cheating lol .. here in melb.. u gotta pick the rite days to get close to half of that! thast on a good day.. (land base)

and i do like ur rod designs also...

it is hard to compete in the rod market.... if urs are hand crafted and pplz are just buying machines mad facotry rods..
just make them for urself or freinds...
at the end of the day.. at least u know urs a quality rods...

thanks for the pics..

cheers

Hey Scott ud'e probably be looking around $220, but havnt done one for a while so would have to get costs ?
really depends on the quality of blank/guides etc u want to use ?
thx kinezo, believe me it's pretty rare off the rocks to get that good a catch here in S.A. too :) i stumbled across a hole i think ?
the rods i do are truely are handcrafted, cause even the custom built ones u buy from a fishing shop are done on a power driven lathe.
i use no power at all it's all done by turning the blank by hand on a hand made unpowered rod lathe, except the epoxy finish where i use a bbq roticery motor :)

Mate, that rod is a work of art
thx Merrilyn :P
also turned the butt end up on a lathe and done some thread work on it too
and heres a pic of an eye "all underbound etc...

Ozarowana - my mistake, I beleive it to be a Silver Perch  not Yellow Belly........good call.

I have a pic of my son holding a big cray on my mobile phone, just need to download it so I can post it in this thread.
