there are very little pros and cons with either one.

I personally prefer the small terracotta cones.

1. in my experience discus generally lay eggs towards the top of the cone. i find that if parent fish spend less time in picking up eggs and returning them to the top ( less travel area ) , they generally stress less and you wont lose as many eggs.

same applied after the eggs hatch. I find that the parents can manage theere fry easier. ( especially if they are new parents )

When discus are ready to spawn, they'll use whatever medium is available. Filter down pipe, bottom of a glass tank, side walls, plant leaves, driftwood, you name it. They'll use it :P
