With all the solid waste that builds up in the filter, will that be broken down by the bacteria or do you have to clean it out? Its a canister filter

You will have to clean it up once a while. Maybe once every 3-6 months depending on how much do you feed your fish

Make sure you dont overfeed them.

Woll, the filter doesn't break down the solid waste. What it does do is convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate, which is less toxic to fish. We then remove nitrate by water changes.

Your filter also removes floating particles from the water. So any uneaten food or solid waste particles are taken into the filter, and held there until we remove them.

Regularly replacing the filter wool in the canister is recommended.

Did the filter clean on the weekend, smelt like lovely fertile soil, so i chucked all the gunk on the garden... lol.
Also put in some phosphate removers into the filter to try and get rid of the black beard algae and bought some true flying foxes to eat it.
