Is it ok to put different discus varieties together if u plan on breeding in the future??

My LFS is extending an wen itz finished there will be a whole section devoted to discus!!

The shop is like a 100m down the street from me so im cheering!!

Anyway im hoping to get maybe 4-6 golden crystel discus and i want to still be able to put other varieties i might see and really like...i might get some of bens BD babies if i can........

So is there a big difference in the price u can sell the babies for if they were a cross between to different varieties compared to if their parents were the same variety... :?

its all respective on what people will pay

and unfortunatley people pay for very clean colours and defined genetic lines

when breeders do bring in new blood they normally do it for a specific reason and take into account past family history and gene dominance

the fish your desciribing, although great, won't fetch as high a price as a well finned blue diamond etc

i still like display's of multicoloured discus though

always stuns a guest in my house LOL

Dont really get that...do u mean that golden crystal discus dont sell for alot or that if a blue diamond is crossed with a golden crystal the babies wont sell for alot or do u mean that bens blue diamonds babies if they breed there babies wont fetch alot??

Very confused LOL....

The recognised strains will always bring a higher price than the cross breeds.

So pure bred golden crystals or pure bred blue diamonds will always be more desirable (and more valuable) than a non specific colour, that is not necessarily better than either of the parents.

exactley

either in a pure form will fetch more

but personally i don't keep discus for the money, LOL, because if i was trying to run my hobby as a business i would have shut it years ago

so i would keep the fish together, and hope that the same type pair up, thats way more fun than haveing evryone seperated  and i'm here for the fun

Agreed with all above.

Pure bred's will fetch more of the bling bling, but if crossing 2 different strains together, well...... that is interesting...

In another post i have a female x brillant blue with fry, i would not have a clue what they will look like when older!

But thats how new strains are made.

cheers,
Ben

the racism part i dont understand: the whole reason for me of chosing to go with discus instead of other fish was becausediscus come in a variety of colors. and the whole idea of breeding and raising few fry i would think is to see what the combination of two look like: we all know white and white will produce another white...

Which store in Blacktown is specialising in Discus??

I am not too far away so i am interested depending on the quality they get.
