Quarantine/hospital tank setup help

hi there i was wanting to get a Quarantine/hospital tank but i am very limited on space i was wondering do you have to keep them set up at all times or just when needed and what size would be the min in gal for discus

A quarantine tank is an absolute necessity when you purchase new fish, of you need to isolate a fish for medication, but, it doesn't need to be set up all the time.

The easiest way is to have a spare sponge filter in one of your other tanks, that you can transfer into your quarantine tank when you need to set it up.
