Metronidazole - (Flagyl)

Praziquantel - (Droncit)

Since these are 2 of the main cures for Discus afflictions I thought I would satrt this thread as a point where as much information about the medications, what they treat, etc, can be put together...

Down the track I will re-format it and make it into an article to be placed in a FAQ section.

Im abit confused with these names. It the ones in brackets the actual name of the products sold in LFS? Just need to know so I know what to ask for. Also how much do you expect to pay for these medications?

Cheers

A hint with this. If you know a nurse or a doctor, they should be able to give you some, if they are kind

Ideally, getting it into their stomachs is the best bet. If they won't take it in food, and you are getting desperate, you can try force feeding through a syringe. I've done this and it's worked.

It will also work (but you need more) just by crushing it up as best as possible, and dumping it in.

Does Metronidazole disturb benificial bacteria? i know that Praziquantel will if left too long after (more than 3 days) without a 25% water change. But they are 2 completely different treatments from what i understand.

I dont think so, but this is solely coming from previous experience. I had no spikes in my parameters afterwards, and the fish made it through.

From my experience metro will not harm beneficial bacteria. If there is any effect, its negligable.

Thought I would add some info, last week I was at the doctors, and as I was there I asked for some Flagyl ... now this time I was prescribed the 400 mg variety as opposed to the 200 mg.

I am treating a tank at the moment ... and I recommend the 400mg . With the 200 mg I found it really hard to dissolve ... the 400 mg ... very easy. Also the 400 mg costs the same as the 200 mg.

Just tell em what you need it for, I think most doctors have a laugh ... as it is an unusual request.

I have heard the liquid contains lots of sugar and will cause excessive bacterial growth.
