Cycling is the term we use when we refer to the time it takes for the tank to mature.

By that we mean, that the good bacteria in the filter have increased to the point where they can consume all the wastes produced by the fish and convert it to a non toxic form.

It's not safe to add fish to a brand new tank that has not been cycled. The toxins produced by the fish waste will build to a point where they are harmful, and can even cause the death of your fish.

If you have put your fish in a brand new tank, without first cycling it, please tell me, and I will talk you through the best way to cycle with fish in the tank.

I agree pitchblack, but in this case, the fish have already been purchased, and added to the tank.
