View Full Version : EOI: Wild Caught & F1 South Americans

Discus co-op
Sun Apr 17, 2005, 09:14 AM
At this stage just an EOI for parties interested in any of the following.

All fish are thoroughly screened after being wild caught.

In Sth America the fish are held for 3 weeks in self contained holding tanks with UV sterilization prior to being forwarded to the staging location where they are held for another 2 weeks in quarantine. From there they are freighted directly to Sydney where they are held for the normal required time (2 weeks) prior to being released to the public.

If you are interested in any of these species (and there are a lot more to add) please indicate by replying here.

Please do not PM or e-mail interest.

I stress this Expression Of Interest is to gather if there would be sufficient interest to ship these 100% wild caught fish to Australia.

EXCELLENT companions for Discus...

That is one stunning list for an EOI !!!
I have a couple of questions for you sir,

*Do you want us to be specific in what EOI we have? ie, how many of each species?

*Is this the whole list? the reason why i ask as it really only has dwarf cichlids, corys discus and a few tetras.

Would there be anything else added to the list in the near future?

The whole idea sounds great!

At this stage we are simply gathering interest, but if the numbers are there, this will happen.

That list is what has been caught this week... most of them are regularly in stock however.

(the true list is actually 5-6 time longer, but due to the allowable import list, some cant be acessed)

If it is on the allowable import list here, and it is from anywhere in the Amazon basin (in particular the following Rivers):

AGUAITIA
AMAZONAS
CAQUETA
HUALLAGA
ITAYA
MARAŅON
MOMON
NANAY
NAPO
NAUTA
PASTAZA
PEVAS
TARAPOTO
TIGRE
UCAYALI

It should be obtainable.

You have me more excited than a child in a lolli shop! :P
One thing i would like if its allowed is young wild caught Uaru Cichlids (Uaru amphiacanthoides)

There are local bred Uaru's available in Australia but they are very interbred. So some new bloodlines is just whats needed!

Thanks again
Ben

Geeez, i am not going to be able to sleep tonite!

I am interested in getting some wild discus and apistos. But that's depend on how much they cost.

Proteus
Sun Apr 17, 2005, 11:16 AM
From what I am aware of with this, they will be cheaper than retail (probably by a long shot, as it is a group of hobbyists that is organising this, not a business, although some businesses will be needed to assist in the logistics)

Ben, it will be some weeks, if not months before this comes to fruition (due to permits, licences etc, etc) and it would benefit hobbyists in Australia and the United States.

"Good things come to those that wait"

This is just what serious Australian fish hobbist's needs!
New wild blood lines! There are a lot of fish (perticalur South American fish) That are way too inbred.

I look forward to when this happens!

Cheers,
Ben

Merrilyn
Mon Apr 18, 2005, 04:14 AM
I think they'll be pretty pleased with a long list

With regard to the wild altums, the tank bred ones from Germany have a much higher survival rate, and a greater chance of breeding in captivity, But I'd be willing to purchase a group of 6 just for the experiment. They do need a deep tank, at least 2 foot deep and preferably 2 foot 6 inches deep. May need to get one custom built if you're really interested.

Merrilyn,

If you end up getting wild Altums I hope you fair better than we. A friend and I bought 24 about 8 months ago and over 3 weeks lost the lot, not one survived! A very expensive exercise.

It was very disappointing as we had the water just right etc but they would eat for a few days, start swimming in circles and then drop dead. Very strange and we never found out what the problem was. My wallet was crying for weeks!

What rotten luck MAC. I have heard a lot of stories similar to yours about the wild altums. I was lucky enough to get three German tank bred altums from Kev 6 months ago. All healthy as horses. Darn, should have got a lot more. Fascinating fish.

Well, the advance party of fish will be hitting Australia sooner than expected...

These are not wild-caughts but F2 fish from wild.

Apistogramma that will be arriving in Aust on Thurs.

A. agassizi "blue" (Alenquer)
A. bitaeniata
A. macmasteri
A. macmasteri "Blue head"
A. papagalo
A. trifasciata maciliensis
A. cactuoides "double red"

These are among the easier to keep, not overly pricey apistogramma. Fish like A. elizabethae can be rather touchy, sensitive and pricey, noting that our quarantine laws require that the cichlids be kept in quarantine for a period of no less than 2 weeks from date of arrival and each species be kept separate, this becomes a very risky option to import a few fish because the market for specialist apistogramma is limited.

*imagine if there is interest for only 3pairs (6fish) of A.elizabethae, these 6 fish will have to take up residence in a 2ft x 18" x 18" tank for 2 weeks. 6 fish will tie down a whole quarantine tank, which does not make it cost effective to quarantine.

I have some interesting corydoras coming available in the coming weeks (arrangements being made atm). If there is interest in any particular type of corydora, let me know and I'll see if we can make arrangements to bring in at least 50 fish (depending on price and availability) of each species.

I have on order for 70pc of 6cm Altum Angels (Orinoco REAL altums). I'm just awaiting their arrival.

Unfortunately uaru, severum and the various earth eaters cannot be imported into Australia so there is no point in putting up the available fish list.

Wild discus will be available in about 6-7weeks time after Aquarama. These wild discus are currently being stabilised for Aquarama in Singapore and after the show, some of them will be making their way down-under. ;)

We're working on things... we're doing the best we can. PATIENCE...

Oh, here are some pictures of an Apistogramma breeding farm. This farm is also in an import/export facility so they get a regular supply of South American fish coming thru. New blood is constantly added to their breeding program.

This farm supplies much of Europe and their parent company is in Belgium.

Corydoras aeneus "neon stripes" (various colour) are on my "to source for" list.

Corydoras arcuatus is definately available although I think they are already being bred in Aust and the locally bred stock may be cheaper than the imported.

will look into C.pulcher and C.geryi
