Cant push myself I only got into discus 4 months ago and to tell you the truth in the lfs around my area Ive only ever seen the basics i didnt even know what a pleco was antil a couple of months back when I seen one in a display tank in a lfs. I asked about it as I wanted to buy one but she said they dont get them in that often to keep trying so I suppose its not my fault, my lfs only stock the basics so Id never seen different. But at least I know what to look around for.

gibbiceps are commonly called sailfin plec's. they are very hard to vome by especially as youngsters. so when they are young they wont last long especially at this price as they can get upto about $500 or more as adults. im pretty sure thats right. anyway who has that sort of money for a catfish?

L046 or Zebra Plecos sell at around $1,000 each at 5cm. The last private sale I came across he wanted $900 which was quite cheap. If you think certain types of Discus are worth big bucks take a look at some catfish that aren't on the import list, it will make your eyes water!

They are expensive because it's not on the allowable import list. Cost less than $100 overseas. They are not actually very rare but still rare.
If discus weren't on the import list it could cost $1000 too since someone has to bring them in illegally.
I like to have a colony of zebra plecos if I have money to throw around.

they may only cost 100 bucks overseas but what they cost and their availability here is what matters

Catfish are catalogued by L numbers. It's a system developed in Germany quite a few years ago because of the many variants within each species. Zebra Plecs will become even scarcer shorlty as the South American government will stop exportation soon as numbers in the wild are starting to dwindle or so I've been told.

DRV keep your money in your pocket, they're not the money making machine some people will have you believe. They only have between 7-12 fry at a time, the mortality rate is high (according to a breeder I know of) and then you have to sell them at a grand, best of luck! I'd rather be like a mate of mine and sell 1000 common bristlenose each week for a buck each, much easier and far less hassle.

Mac,
You are %100 right !!breeding zebra plecos are not going to make any one millionares! but you really cant compare the looks of a common bristle nose(or any other bristlenose) to a zebra pleco!

ofcourse you cant get rich on them..... i dont think. if you were able to breed them with a good sucess rate say 6/10 for example, if you advertised them australia wide ect, they would all be on hold the first day of sale.
