hi guys , i just bought a hang on top filter for my tank n put some bio ring and volcaone rock inside then try to use , anyone can tell me how to grow useful bacteria in the filter to remove the ammonia n nitrite ?my tank size is 3' x 1.5'x1.5' with 22 nos of 2.5" discus. thank you .

hi mate leave it there and bacteria will start to grow, in 2 weeks it will have bacteria to convert ammonia to no2 then 2-3 weeks later the species that convert no2 to no3 will be present.

if this is your only filter youll need to do big water changes and regular ammonia and no2 checks just to make sure everything is on (shoot for 0 of both)
