In my opinion that are not worth the money as they tend to distribute the waste back into the tank and not the mesh bag. I am talking about the Eheim model as this is the only one I have tried.

Nothing beats the good old garden hose connected to the gravel vac.

It works well for my cherry shrimp tank.. For my Bare bottom tank, well, unless you dont want to wrap your lips around a hose it could be good as they come with a hose attachment as well as the micro filter bag. Would not use filter bag on bare bottom.

Waste of time PBS money the idea of the water change is to smash down your level of DOC's a gravel vac will just reeve the big stuff and leave the harmful stuff behind

Well i have a small 20l cherry shrimp tank... And the ability to suck & not suck at the push of a button has saved a few hundred shrimp over the time and kept my bare bottom shrimp tank clean and tidy and nearly best $12 spent.

but besides that a waste ;)
