Hi All,

I've had a read through this forum and have done some searching but I hope someone can help me identify these. I've just noticed that one of my discus has a couple of strange white lumps, just below its nostrils.

The fish is otherwise fine, eating well, good colour, etc.

Images added as attachments, something wrong with my hosting account.

What are they?

Many thanks,
Doug

There are two small holes on each side of a fish above its mouth. These are the fish's nostrils or nares. Fish don't breathe through these, but they can detect odors through them. These nares allow fish to smell odors.

In my opinion your fish looks pretty normal. These usualy become more pronounced in Discus at around the age of 12 months plus

Yes, but aren't the nostrils just above the circled lumps in the 1st & 3rd images?

Cheers,
Doug

nope. what you have circles are nares. above that are pores. every discus has them. In fact to get more technical. Fish have 2 kinds of pores. Some are visible and some are not. In the case of discus the pores on the head are clearly visible. Some of these pores are used for osmoregulation and some for slime secretion
