:? hi everyone,

can anyone help me with a driftwood question.
i would like to know can you use saltwater mangrove roots in your discus tank and if not what type of wood can i use as i just purchase a 6x2x2 and need some driftwood for it.

I have tried to use driftwood from the beach before but the ph levels kept on rising. Put it in a bucket or a bath depending on it's size and moniter the ph. Good luck

Yes you can.. Like any wood, just give it a good soaking first. More to clean it and saturate it so it sinks more than remove the salt. As far as I'm aware, all mangrove trees grow in at least a brackish environment so I don't know that there is a 'fresh water' variety - but I've been wrong before..

The amount of salt contained in the wood would be insignificant. In fact, many Discus keepers add a small amount of sea salt to the tank as a general tonic - I know I did and my fish never suffered any of those niggling ailments you here so much about.

If you care to come for a drive I have some DW you can have for nicks..
