Currently for sale at Fishchicks is an unidentified apistogramma from the cruzi subcomplex. I have bought a pair, and they are slowly colouring up.

Just so I am certain I understand you - you said you purchased an unidentified pair of Apistogramma - if this is the case how sure are you that you have a matched pair ? eg: both genders of the same specie

G'day Hassles,

I understand where you are coming from. I can't guarantee that the male and female are of the same species. They are wild caught, and I would hope that this import batch represents one wild caught colony all of the same species.

There were quite a few Apistogramma "Galaxy" in store and I picked out the dominant male and female from the tank.

I guess you could question all wild caught shipments. There is no guarantee that a shipment of wild caught beanschi "Inka50" contains all male and female beanschi "Inka50".

They way I look at it is, I recently purchased a pair wild Masken as well. I didn't have any proof that the male and female were both Masken, I have to take the word of the LFS (Fishchicks in this case), just as the LFS has to trust it's wholesaler/supplier, and the wholesaler/supplier has to trust the exporter from Peru and the exporter has to trust the native collectors.

Just becuase one species is labled with it's scientific name and another is labled with a "catch-all" or "descriptive" name doesn't gaurantee that there won't be any contaminants in either shipment.

You can check out the Identification thread I posted over at Apistogramma Forums if you like, and ask Mike Wise if he has any concerns that the "pair" represent fish from different species. http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=11028

All that really matters is that "you" have some confidence that you have a same species pair.

I have had plenty of dealings with Fish Chicks and have been impressed with the way they do business on all accounts so the odds are stacking up in your favour. That is a good shot of the female and she looks good from my perspective.

If you ever want an unrelated A.masken, I have a tank full

take care

Oh by the way, I note you're using my preferred sponge filters - great ain't they?

They are the best sponge filters. I like that you can create some surface movement and current in a small tank without blowing the fish all over the place.

I did a water change and tank vac yesterday, and rearranged the tank lay out a little yesterday afternoon. Appears the pair like the change. The female is now a nice shade of yellow and actively courting the male, trying to entice him to her clay pot of choice.

Male foraging.

Very nice, I like the female's spawning dress. Unusual position for the spot on the side - cant quite call it a lateral spot there, but I havent kept any cruzi complex fish before.

Hope the spawn goes well.

Cheers

Steph

Hi Steph,

It's not a lateral spot, it's a minor case of Black Spot disease. Some of the females had it worse than others, but I couldn't really see any on the males.

I chose the dominant male and female from the tank, so I got a little lucky the female was pretty clean.

As a side note, there are some new Pebas in store, and OMG is the dominant male Pebas HUGE. There are also some Inka II in store as well.

Oh, and if anyone has a male Apistogramma sp. Abacaxis, there are two lonely girls in store, and they look nice. Or you can send me a male and I'll buy the two girls to keep him company.

A couple of new shots of the male from today. He colours up a little more each week.

They are nice apistos, have not seen them before. How big is the spawn size?
