View Full Version : How many use a uv steriliser?????

Hi,
im setting up my 5ft tank again for discus and was wondering if i should put a uv steriliser on it. How many on here use them on there tanks??? Are they worth the money?????

depends on what you mean, they'll help maintain the redox, keep small infectious organisums down so that makes them good, but good husbandry will do the same

I never run a tank without a correctly sized UV.

One one of my tanks the canister includes a UV which I use occasionally.

If you're running UV's and selling a lot of fry to shops that don't run UV's you can have issues. A few of the shops a friend of mine was selling to were losing his juves far too regularly and eventually they worked out it must be the UV.

It took him a good 6 months to realise what was going on but eventually he had about 30%-40% of the water bypass the UV and all was good, no more losses. It must be something to do with their immune system and going from pristine water to something a bit average, nothing concrete ever came of it but it worked.

Thats my reasoning. I'd prefer to let the weaker ones with crap immunity die off and be left with stronger fish in the long run. After all we are after quality not quantity right?
