I have read that if your fish are breeding then they're in good shape and the water is right. I've had two spawning in my display tank for a bit now. I will be putting them into a 70 litre on the weekend. Personally I think that fish can spawn under rather ordinary conditions, whether they be discus or otherwise. Basically, my question is: should I worry less about my water quality considering they are spawning. Or is this no real indication as to whether I have a healthy tank?

They will only spawn if they're happy, well fed, and they believe the conditions will allow them to raise their fry.

So from that alone, I think you can take it that they are happy with the water conditions.

But remember, whilst they will spawn, it doesn't mean the water is good enough to hatch the eggs and raise fry. That's a whole different ball game :P
