Hi Paul

Sounds like you most likely have a pair, the smaller one could be a female, there is quite a bit of size difference between the sexes. A pic would help but a female will have a rounder tail not a pointy (lanceolate) tail, be mostly yellow with a black lateral stripe and have black on the leading edge of the ventral fins.

Breeding should be OK in pH of 6.5ish with softwater (probably a bit more important) provide several small caves and feed well to condition, feed live and frozen food if you can but stay away from blood worms. Provide a few target/dither fish to keep them occupied.

Apistos are more sensitive to water quality than africans in my experience however arent that messy so dont create a huge bioload like the bigger Central Americans. The one thing I really like to do is provide a sand substrate as they are really love to sift through it.
