I was thinking of some snails for algae clean up but have heard of problems with them. Are there any snails which will work out OK in Discus type conditions without breading like crazy or eating the plants?

not really, if you have substarte live bearing trumpet snails arn't too bad as you dont see them during lights on, lights off is a diffrent story, if you really wanted to use a snail red ramshorns would be my choice, but soft acidic water isn't good for snail shells, also red rams dont seem to like temps over 28C.
