Feeding Mussels

How often do you/should you feed Mussels ?

My fish go mental for them, anyone else feed them as part of a daily diet? :)

Never tried on fish, but from my own consumption, it does taste metallic...afterall, it is as filter feeder so I imagine the metal content in it may be quite high.

Do you feed it raw or cooked?

Hi Sf,

I get bags of frozen cooked mussels from Tesco here in the Uk. As for the taste of them, I wouldn't know, I am not a shellfish person, in fact they turn my stomach just thinking of eating them.........but, the fish love them.
I don't nkow about the metallic content, I would imagine that it is minimal as these are sold for human consumption.

The fish murder them each time I feed. I will try to get some video of a feeding time. :wink:

Thats interesting Steve. I'd love to see a video if you have time. I guess the difference for me would be the price and also where they are grown.
Here in Aust we get all types of nasty seafood from countries like Vietnam but also extremely high quality from our own country and NewZealand.

Here we go Matt, this is just one chopped mussel. I only fed about half of it.

Wow they sure do swallow those mussel bits up quick Steve.

Do you think there would be any problems with the freshness of the mussel? And just to confirm the mussels your using are pre-cooked and frozen?
I'd imagine there would be some great benefits from adding this to there diet especially for growing juvi's. Great vid too mate.... wd ;)

Jothy are prawns considered good on that basis?

prawns are great they have very little fat far less than beefheart are full of minerals and full of pigment enhancing substances.

muscelles might even have more protein and less fat again.

jothy is right, they have very little fat content, but the main reason I am feeding them each day on this is to see how the colours change. I am led to believe that they have a natural yellow enhancer in them. This is something I want to look at more closely.

Female mussels are pinkish and the males white, so if you only fed the females then you may get some colour enhancement. Top vid Steve, they look like they want to jump out to get at the food.
