Hi all,

I'm after suggestions and thoughts about the best way to get my tank back up and running to keep some discus, but there are a few issues...

Last year I moved up to Darwin from Sydney. In sydney I had a mon to friday job so I had plenty of time to maintain my tank and do water changes twice a week. Since arriving I have set up my tank but as there were no fish shops here i was keeping a few natives to try and keep me happy, but its no good I miss my discus. I have to travel sometimes for work now so water changes were pretty random but the fish didn't seam to mind.

Now the tank is shut down but every day i look at the forum and see so many nice fish I want to start it up. My biggest problem is that some time I might be away with work for 2 weeks and once last year it was five weeks but that is unlikely to happen again. If I stock lightly (its a 3x2x2, i was thinking 6 fish) can i get away with missing a water change every now and then. I have one of those denitrate filters if that would help? I could get my girlfriend to change some water, she has been keen to learn about Discus but is still brand new to keeping fish and might miss early signs of sickness ect...

Any comments welcome on whether It can be done without being too much of a risk to the fish? My setup is as follows:

3x2x2 tank
Eheim 2028, if this is not enough i will get another one
pondmaster UV 36w, overkill but it was same price as the 25w
Aquamedic de nitrate filter

Cheers

You certainly had some gorgeous fish in Sydney... what a shame you had to sell them and move.

Given you problems I guess there are many different ideas you can consider.
I personally would purchase adult discus and stock only 4 in your 3ft tank. Then train your girlfriend to do water changes for you.
Unless your running a sump or numerous filters 2 weeks is a longtime without a water change.

Beautiful fish!! Especially the orange specimen in the first image. I've never seen this type before, what is it and where did you get it... excuse my ignorance.

Its a Golden Leopard Snakeskin and I got it from a friend. Not sure what sex it was but it was very nice.
