they are a stem plant "Blyxa japonica" to do really well they need a fair amount of light and CO2 and yes they look great as a for/mid ground plant

Your tank and your discus look spectacular :)

When you say you got rid of the BBA does that mean bearded black algae and if so how did you do it ?

Yes the dreaded black beard and to be honest I don't really know how I did it but after months of fighting it .it just started to turn white and die .I increased my water changes to 50% and twice a week and I cut down on my ferts a few weeks ago so maybe that did the deed

gee thats pretty good.

The only sure fire way to get rid of that algae was to strip the tank down and start again!

Just common old T8 lighting ,a combination of power glow and sun glow tubes about 3 watts per gallon
