Fill in the blank

For a planted aquarium with discus of course what type of bulbs should i be getting?

Compact Fluorescent _________ ?
a) 10,000°K
b) 6700°K
c) 50/50
d) and Actinic bulbs

My guess: is B; maybe A.

the hood carries 4 65 watt bulbs. two of witch i have managed to blow in 3 days... i guess i shouldn't be using the switch because that's when they seem to never turn on again (flipped the switch it lite up and turned off. next day another one did it). i need to buy a timer :P. its a coralife: freshwater aquarium: 4 65 watt.

As always thank you!

THIS QUESTION IS FUNDEMENTALY FLAWED!
sorry mate, plants dont "see kelvin color" the see spectrum, what you want is globes with good strong spectral peaks in blue and RED.

that being said, the warmer a globe (ie lower the kelvin color) the redder it is so my vote is for the 6700k, but even these may only have strong peaks in the yellow/green region where our eyes see best (and hence the tubes will look brighter to us).

Most plant geeks go for the 6500 K but it tends to be a bit yellow...so...many go for a mix of 6500 and 10,000 K

Since I'm new at all of this, maaaaaate, how do you know the fish/discus like yellow light better? I do not mean this to be a silly question. Nor is it my intension to begin an argument. As an Australian politician once said, “Please explain?” BTW how do we know they indeed see colour.

Actinic bulbs do very little for your plants but make some discus strains look awesome in the light.

im not sure if they see color but i do know they see shades, such as fry looking for their parents. yellow light is a lower shade than white light? discus do not like full light.

Nor am i expert though... hence me making the question / poll.
