Hi, I got into Discus about 3 months ago. I picked up 2 from my LFS at the begining of August and then 3 more a month later from a breeder online. I got off to a bad start and picked some not so great fish, but they are starting to grow out now and looking decent as far as I can tell. I started them out in a planted tank but eventually switched them over to a 55 gallon barebottom. I wish I had gone the route from the get go but live and learn I suppose.

Heres some pics from when I first got them. The two turks are from my LFS. They have better stock than this but I just didnt know good from bad when I started despite the amounts of research I did before hand.

Forgive the poor pics but I cant go back in time.. The two lfs turks..

After that I got 2 Marlboro Reds and a Cobalt from an online breeder..

And here they are as of last night.. Hopefully they still have a few more months of growing in them. The 3 fish I got in september are still quite young, 3 and 4 months respectivly. The ones of the LFS god only knows how old they might be.. Hopefully only 5 or 6 months..

The Blue Turks are about 5" TL, the larger Marlboro is about 3.5-4" TL, the smaller marb about 3" TL and the Cobalt 2.5-3TL so not large by anymeans but if I can get them to 6" Ill be pretty happy with my first effort.

Oh, I should mention that the Larger of the two Marlboros, significantly larger, was smaller than the other when I first got them. He is a ferocious eater tho.

Thanks for looking..
Jim

LOL

I had some bad luck when i got my first 2 aswell. I bought a Red Turq and a Penang Eruption. The eruption was very young and had a bad case of worms which i couldnt seem to nail. He is very healthy now but im worried he will be a bit stunted. He is still a great little fish though and should still turn out fine.

What are you feeding them atm?

Everything, beefheart mix, brine shrimp, bloodworms, tetra colorbits. They eat whatever I give them. I feed 4-5 times a day depending on work schedule.

The two turks seem to have paired off so I'm guessing they are older than I thought. If I get fry from them those will be my first unstunted discus. haha. Im going to empty out a 20 gallon high for the two of them and see what happens.

one of your turqs looks really good - feed him well and he'll grow nicely. Hard to tell how the melons are, the first pic, they look a bit stunted but the second pic they look fine, good colours! Have fun look after them

Jim, for the quality of fish you first bought, they have turned out reasonably well. You are doing a very good job there. Just think what you could do with a few A grade fish.

The first pic of the melons is when I first got them, the second pic is more recent.

Edit- They are not Melons, rather young Marlboro Reds who still havnt fully colored up. You even had me beleiving for a minute.
