ok may sound like a silly question but thought that I had better check anyway. I am setting up a 4x2x2 for my fishies.I have a community tank set up mainly discus. In my current tank set up I have gravel plants some rock and driftwood. My new tank will be of the same set up but of course I will need to add some new gravel. When I remove my old stuff from the tanks to add to the new should I give it a good wash? I am not sure if the bacteria in the gravel is benefiicial to the balance in the tank or not or it is all done by the bacteria in the filter.

i think to get rid of harmfull bacteria, algae ... it's good to give it a good wash. The beneficial bacteria in your filter alone can handle the load for now.

Give it a wash in some of your tank water (From you exisiting tank).

That way you'll be able to get rid of any excess sediment, while not destroying / killing any good bacteria etc.
