Last night I went to my local fish shop and found an aquanova (I think) 3 x 28 watt light for $165. The only other price that i could get from a fish shop as 250 for an equivalent.

also on ebay this morning I had a look at
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/T5-AQUARIUM-OVERHEAD-LIGHT-4x54W-Hi-Output-120cm-Long_W0QQitemZ310083409122QQihZ021QQcategoryZ20754 QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

will end up being the same price... but i'm concerned about the price of 54w bulbs later on...

Which would you recommend?

if your going to buy t5 go ho thats 4foot 54w. the only reason you need t5's is to grow plants if not use t8's cheeper and better clours available.

if you want to gro plants DONT BUY CHEEP LIGHTS.

hagen make some good t5's at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the advice. I am only planning to grow 3-4 sword plants in that tank and I have had one grow quiet nicely up to this point with just the single t8 bulb. I guess the best thing for me to do at the moment would be replace the bulb as it's getting on a bit and see how I go.

thats proably all you need, the best thing about T8's is that they are cheep to buy, cheep to run and their efficiency is very hight, MH and T5 HO's put out ALOT more light but are no ware near as efficient with out reflecters.
