Substrate for a planted discus set up

G'day ive decided to take the plunge! :D

I currently have african with beach sand. What is the best substrate for growing plants in and that is suited for discus?

Also what other fish can go with Discus? I was hoping to put some guarmies (spelling) in as well.

my favorite is red sea flora base, followd by eco complete and then dulpa ground.

flourite is ok but needs macros to get the plants really growing, i dont like flourirte red, avoid onyx it brings up your ph.

i dont like layered substrates for a discus tank cause i gravel vac alot, so i try and avoid laterite jbl etc.
