I'm shopping for a filter for my 125 Gal tank. Both these filters are rated for the max of 160 gal. The problem I have is the price difference. The Pro II is about $100 more. I wonder why and what is the advantage of paying that extra $100?

Anther question is if the filter is a bit weak for me. I would like to stay about 70% of the max filter capacity, which means for the max rate of 160 gal, I should use for tanks less than 111 gal. A bit smaller than my current 125 gal tank. Do you think one of these filters will be fine for me or I need to look at a bigger one?

I have one Fluval 304 and one 404 running for the tank. Last time I had hard time restart the 404 after cleaned it up. That made me think of having a new filter. My 13 discus are too much to take a change on the 404.

Any other options other than these two filters? Any problems with these two?

The 2028 has a few more features and is made in germany, hence the higher price for the enginering and manufacture.

It's easier to clean, easier to start (to be honest i still suck on mine to prime it) and has more media capacity (7.3L vs 6.0L), it has more flow with 1050L/h vs 1000l/h and uses nice bnig 16mm hoses on both inlet oand out put which resist clogging alot more then the 12mm on the 2217.

the 2217 is bullet proof, simple easy efficient and cheep, there is no by pass at all through the filter media. parts are also cheeper and there are less of them (no hemadic sleals or top connecter).

I run 9x2217's 2x2228 and 1x2028. they are all great filters, for the money nothing beats the 2217 (in oz you can get 2 2217's on sale for $60 more then a 2028).

Both these filters will struggle with a well stocked 125gal (500L i would say a 2217 maxs out at about 250-280L and a 2028 at about 280-300L).

My choice would be 2 2217's, one at each end of the tank or if you want to keep your 404, fill it full of GOOD media (eheim, micromech, siporax etc NOT the FLUVAL STUFF!!) use that at one end and either a 2217 or a 2028 on the other (if you get the 2217 the extra $100 you save would proably pay for your media for thr fluval).

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of get 2 2217s then. In US, the Pro II is about $100 more than the 2217. If tha's the case, I can put in about $60 to get two 2217s instead of one Pro II.

I'll monitor the price and see if I can catch them on sale. I figure I still have the Fluvals good till next time I have to clean them.
