HI all, Just wondering if any one has noticed if the male pays more attention to the eggs than the female? I have a pair that are laying once a week, but some of the eggs are going white and then all are getting eaten.
Secondly why i am asking is that i am unsure as to which is the male and the female, and thought maybe knowing if one pays more attention than the other parent may help me solve this.
One of them is about 8cm and the other is 10cm approx. Very happy and healthy fish, they also have a goldfish in with them to clean up excess food waste but are in their own section with a breeding cone.
I will add pictures when i can.

If eggs are being laid once aweek and you have never had fry spawn, chances are they're both females.
Also a Snow leopard / Pigeon blood proberly aren't the best colours for breeding.

They look like nice fish thou...!!!

jesus, a goldfish! they are very messy fish!

about the eggs, like Matt says, they could both be females, or maybey they are jst young and dont know what to do? or other thing,

do they lay eggs close to the filter input?? i know this can take away the sperm whilst male fertilizing the eggs.

thats ur Ph?

hi guys they are definatly male and female i have established that much!
they only have a bio sponge in the tank with them when they spawn and they have very strong bond.
i usually run my water at 6.0ph 30deg temp and very soft water 40ppm
they seem to be spawning at a rate of once a week and lay close togther cluster of eggs on the glass or spawning cone . the eggs look grey brown and after 24 hours there seems to be 1 or 2 white eggs after 48 hrs there is at least half white eggs and at approx 72 hrs mark they eat they eggs!
i have them in a glass bottom 2ftx18inchx18inch tank with gr8 airation and good filtration exept when the spawn occurs i remove my sand filters and internal power filter.

ok will give that a try, i put my big white butterfly male in the breeding tank and confirmed the big snake skin was definatly a male he wasnt impressed with a 14+cm male invading his space which tells me i have a boy and not 2 girls in the pair . i think the are possibly just coming of age boy is 11cm girl is 9cms laying aprox 100 eggs per spawn they paired of at 6cms and have been highly agressive in protecting there bond!
thanks for your advise will give it a go! :D

Love your tank setup!!

What's the size of the tank in volume & dimensions?

How many fish do you have & size?

and what's your tank setup?

How's your attempt at breeding going so far?

My two Discus (Blue Diamond(F) & Pigeon Blood(M) ) have parred for theirs & my first time, but not sure what to do.

Have laid their first number of eggs just above the filter pickup tube, which worrys me, but before anything could progress my blasted pakstani loaches gobbled them up.

I have since gotten rid of them because my wife & I want to try a breeding tank. Not sure what to. My current tank is;

-200ltr/55gal
-three anubias logs
-plant river background
-Jebo style tank, with trickle filter trays on top and gravel below
-two congo's, three Bristle nose Catfish, two clown loaches

I am sure they will spawn again in a week or so, from what I've read, but want to set up my breeding tank just fine , but not sure about the details.
