First Discus Loss

This may not be the best question to ask in a forum to help keep discus alive and healthy, and also to provide the best possible environment! But, I want to know how long did it take for you all to lose your first discus after owning them for the first time????

6 weeks (new tank syndrome)

I still have my original 2 discus they would be 11 years now but have lost another 2 last year when my father-in-law was feeding them while I was on holidays. (won't be leaving him in charge again).

3-4 months I think but it was a crook little fella to start with.

6-7 months. It jumped out out the little 2cm gap in the lid and woke up to see him or her dead on the floor and it had to be my favourite one!

I'm new to the world of discus and I'm having a tank made at the moment with glass lids but no hood - all this talk of jumping discus is freaking me out!

I figure that you would have to leave a gap open in the lids for the inlets/outlets and wires etc.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how you can get these into the tank without comprimising the security of lids and risking escape???

just get the corner cut off on side, a 2cm hole will do.

today. me and my dad have been keeping discus for years and i started our new tank with their spawn. so these were technically my 1st discus loss. 2 weeks into new tank gone 1 already down. water seems to be fine i believe it may have just been too much stress for the little bugga.

0 no3 sounds like an un cycled tank to me.

I'm also a noob with discus. I started 5 months ago and 0 loss in discus at the time but one loss with cardinal.
I hope that will continue on.
