Matrix is a longterm biological substrate, a colinisation site for both aerobic and anerobic bacteria which decompose ammonia (NH3 and NH4) and NO2. i believe its ceramic based as it "feels" diferent to the sintered glass stuff that eheim substrate pro, jbl micromech and siporax use, still it has good surface are and many people rave about it.
