My guess is there are some hi fin blue diamonds, the red fish in the foreground is a red rose and the red/orange fish in the background is a strain of pigeon blood. (Based upon looking at the second picture.)

A cross between what and what I have no idea, the breeder should have a better idea.
The body of the fish should be red, the head region is too dark and should be slightly golden colour.
When the fish is stressed, the body colour becomes slightly darker and it may show the black band around the fins as they were in the breeding mood. Attached pictures of the RGD.

Very interesting
So what happens to those RGDs when they go into a black gravel, heavely
planted tank

Is there any pics of those RGDs in a dark enviroment, planted with black gravel?

Cheers Wayne

Mine are all in a dark background and bare bottom but If they are in a dark environment with black gravel plus planted, the fish colour should be slightly darker with more intense red on them.

Take your pick Allan. I reckon most breeders in Australia are just about over RGD's. After all the BS I reckon they should pack 'em all up, ship 'em back to Asia and leave them there. I'd say they're a San Merah that's just seen a ghost.

Ahhh MAC, some of us will never be over RGDs.

Okay, now here's a little story.

I have recently acquired two pairs of RGD from a well known breeder, and imported into Australia by someone who's judgement I trust, and who actually saw them at the breeder's home before they were shipped.

After the suitable quarantine period, in a bare tank, as all quarantine tanks are, the fish were shipped to me in Melbourne. I was delighted with the colour of them. The females had bright white faces with deep red body colouring, a white halo in the dorsal fin, and the rest of the fins clear.

Males were a little less colourful. White faces but much less body colour.

They were still quite young, and I wanted to give them some time to grow and pair off, so I put them into one of my heavily planted tanks with a few others.

The tank has a black background, dark substrate, and far too many plants, but the fish seem to love it.

Within a week the two pairs had formed, and one pair began spawning on the filter intake pipe, but the interesting thing was the colour. The white face on the female had turned grey, the white halo on the dorsal fin had turned almost black, the pectoral, anal and caudal fins had turned dark, and each scale on the body seemed to be edged with black.

The red colour of the females became so intense, they almost glowed in the dark LOL.

Now, I've seen hormoned RGDs before this (I owned some actually) so I'm very familiar with them. These fish do NOT look hormoned. I believe it's a result of the planted tank and dark background.

Even more interesting, I've now moved one of the confirmed pairs into a bare breeding tank with a light background, and just a breeding cone.

The female has begun to lose the dark colouring in the fins, and the face is returning to white, despite the fact that they are preparing to spawn.

Curious.

I know these fish to be genuine RGD.

I'll post some pics later in the week.

I agree Ben, now hopefully the stock we're seeing from Xtreme will bring back an interest in the true RGD.
