Just a quick question. I read people saying that they are using a sump instead of a filter or something. How does this work? Is it better than using a canister?

You need to discuss that with your LFS. Search the net for "trickle filter" , "wet/dry filter"

Usually sumps have a huge capacity compared to Canisters & HOB's...

they are external to the tank, which gives you a little more control over things as well...

It is also a great way of hiding all the equipment for display tanks (heaters, etc)

Dave its normally good for running multiple tanks. Aswell it increases the volume of the setup and gernerally makes maintaince a little easier.

Only downside is having the room to put it.
