Hi,
Im soon to order my discus of the lfs and need some advice. The lfs can either order discus from Aquarium industries or he can get discus from bayfish and need to no which place would have better qualtity fish as i wont see them until they arrive in Horsham. The only fish i have seen from Aquarium industries is a couple that he had in his tanks and they both had beutiful red eyes with high fins. Whats ya thoughts also would these fish have already been quartined.??? Cheers Axl

Axl, I've heard good reports about the quality of fish from Aquarium Industries. Not had much to do with Bayfish, so can't comment there.

I think the import thing to do is to specify what you are looking for in a fish ... e.g. red eye... when you place your order, and that you won't accept a fish with say, a golden eye (or whatever). Your LFS can then pass on that information when he is placing the order.

The fish would have been held in quarantine at AI for the required period of time (usually 2 weeks) after arriving from overseas, before they are sent to your local fish shop.

You would still need to quarantine them at home for three or four weeks before adding them to your existing colony of fish.

Thanks for the advice this is a new tank that has just finished cycling. There is nothing there at the moment. Could i put 8 discus straight in there. Its a 520ltr tank. Sounds like i might have to order of aquarium industries.

The way you cycled the tank will determine the size of the bio colony, and thus how many fish you can add at once.

If you cycled using pure ammonia, you will have a huge bio colony, and can easily add 8 fish at the same time.

If you cycled with a few small hardy fish, then three would be the maximum you could add at the beginning, and even then, you need to keep an eye on the ammonia levels till the bio colony increases in size.

Two weeks later you could add another three, and two weeks after that you could add the final 2.

I cycled the tank using pure ammonia which is good. I will do a 80% wc before adding the fish. Thanks for ya help and any other advice on adding the fish so they settle in nicely. Cheers

You can add them all at once. It should be a fairly even playing field, with all of them being new to the tank.

Expect some pushing and shoving in the beginning, but it shouldn't be too bad, because none of them has been able to establish a territory.

Bear in mind AI & Bayfish are not specialist Discus importers. They just order by numbers, no gaurantee of specific strains other than the basics.

only after the basic strains, turqs, diamonds, leopards and its a bit hard since i live 3 hours from melbourne. They will have to do

bayfish has a decent variety of strains, however as for quality i can not say much as i simply dont know. AI is very good for their sizes and a 7cm discus is more of 10cm if consider nose to tip of the tail.

as for the quality, you will always get a few good ones in a bunch. So keeping that in mind all you really need to do is pass this message on and they will catch u a good fish!

AI is also very good with claims if you do end up with fish you are unsatisfied with.

By from a Victorian (local) breeder unless you want fish that almost glow in the dark.

I no i should Mac but i like to support our lfs. I have to keep them in business. Its different if you live in the city but i live in the country and if you dont support them they might not be there.

Why don't you make a special day trip to Melbourne and go to OAFI. See the fish live, fall in love and choose the ones you truly desire? OAFI could package them for you and you could drive straight home on the spot.
