Is it safe to age water in barrels that still smell?

I have 2 barrels that used to hold pickled onions in acetic acid. I just put salt water in them for a week to clean them, and am now emptying them (of course ill rinse them out to get rid of the salt). However, they still smell, although it is not bad as before. Is it safe for me to use them?

They should be fine. When I was using 200 litre barrels they had been used for olives and stank like helll for months but they were clean and had been bleached time and time again. At worst it will give your fish bad breath!

Phew!

I was going to soak some driftwood in them for now but was worried that the odour would somehow pollute the water.

Ill never eat pickled onions...ever

Cheers!

bleach them and put them out in the sun.
