Microscopic identification
Hi all
I've just obtained a couple of microscopes and was wondering if anyone here uses them for the identification of parasites / bacteria at all.
Can anyone recommend any resources with pics etc - I've got a couple of books with some microscopic pics, but not a lot.
I can go from 60x to 900x
Thanks
Dave

G'day Dave,
Two books come to mind that should have what your after are -
The New Illustrated Guide to Fish Diseases ... by Gerald Bassleer.
This book has a chapter on dissection and preparation of slides etc, aswell as some good pics of various diseases and pathogens. Very good book.
The other is Discus Health by Deiter Untergasser (sp), this book has microscopic pictures of most of the nasties that effect discus.
HTH
Cheers,
Dee

G'day Dave,
I had a bit of trouble finding those two books locally, but then again I didn't look too hard anyway, both are readily available on Ebay.com or Amazon.com (not the Aus Ebay). With 'Discus Health' by Dieter Untergasser, try to get the 2nd edition with the two orange PB's on the cover published in 1991, it's the most recent edition. The 1st edition has a illustration of a discus in blue on the cover, either will be fine though. HTH
Cheers,
Dee

Dave, the Untergasser book should be in the PCS library if my memory serves me. It does have most of the common nasties and good detail on how to use a microscope.

I managed to get a copy of
The New Illustrated Guide to Fish Diseases ... by Gerald Bassleer.
Some great & rather unsettling images in that book - I didn't realise just how sick some fish can look and still remain alive.
Thanks for the tip on the PCS library mtchye, I'll check it out next meeting

If anyone else has access to a microscope & what not here is a great site for identification - hundreds of pics of various things.
