Hi africandiscus, and welcome to the forum. Like you, I have mostly bare bottom tanks because I feed juveniles heavily to increase growth. Clean up is so much easier with nowhere for the stale food to hide. I still have driftwood and plastic plants, so it's not completely spartan, but I do like to see a clean tank.

depends on how much you put in in the first place. My discus can get in under the plants to get the stray bits of BH.
